Online Dating – What We Think Of It

Let’s face it, when Mrs Surfer and I were dating online dating and even the internet itself was unheard of. I bet most people now would hate the thought of dating and not being able to even send someone a text to keep in touch. However, we dated successfully in the 70s without all of this modern technology. We’re still married now, have three children and one grandchild so we can’t have been too bad at it 😉

However you want to meet someone, we wish you all the best. Things aren’t quite the same these days and social distancing means that meeting someone new at the pub or even at work is much less likely. That is why we feel that online dating apps can be a really good way of meeting people. After all, you can do it all from the safety (And warmth) of your own home, which sounds like a really idea to me.

Joining A Site

That said, we can definitely see the benefits to online dating, especially in the current climate. Our children have used online dating websites and they do seem like a really good way to meet new people. What we liked about them is that there seems to be a number of different online dating websites to choose from. This means that wherever you are or whatever you’re into, you should be able to find a dating website that suits you. For example, if you want to date in Strathclyde or you want to date someone into extreme sports you can find a dating website that suits and sign up.

It’s important to be upfront and honest with people so take time to create a profile. Use lots of up to date photos and write a little about yourself and what you’re looking for – although you might not want to give too much away.

Remember that not everyone on the site will be looking for the same as you and that is okay. Spend some time messaging people and getting to know them. You can always then swap contact details with the ones you like the most.

Meeting New People

We imagine that signing up and meeting new people can be quite daunting. We’re currently shielding and about to go into Tier 3, so of course actually physically getting out and about to meet new people is even harder.

However, during all of the restrictions this year we have made massive use of video calling and definitely think this is something that would be a good way to get to know someone. When you speak to someone on the phone, especially when it comes to video calling you get an idea of what they’re like and whether you click. This is great because it means that when restrictions are lifted & you’re able to get out and meet new people safely, you can do so with someone that it feels like you already know.

The Good Side of Online Dating

We would always recommend staying safe and keeping your wits about you when online dating. Ensure that you’re meeting in a public space and that someone knows where you are going. Keep In touch with a friend to make sure they know you’re okay.

That said, why not have some fun with it? With restrictions in place it is harder than ever to meet people in real life. I mean, lots of us aren’t even going out to work every day now so the numbers of people we see each day are drastically reduced.  With online dating you get the opportunity total to and meet new people, without any restrictions and risk putting a dampener on things. Maybe you could look up online games to do together or watch the same film on Netflix at the same time? There must be lots of inventive ways to get to know someone online, so why not give it a go?

This combined with the fact that we’re all spending more time at home than ever, why not use our smartphones and laptops to meet new people? I mean, last week I used my phone to research and buy a new fish tank which is something I will really enjoy. It just makes sense that we get joy from whatever we can currently and if for you that is online dating, we say go for it!
