Mrs Surfer and I have been happily married for a number of years so have never had to navigate the world of online dating. We have 3 grownup children that have, so heard many different stories surrounding meeting people via the internet and know that many great things can come from meeting this way.
That said, if you are going to meet someone online then you should make sure you go about it the right way to ensure it goes as smoothly as possible. Some tips I would recommend are:
As grownups people will be looking for their own things from social media and that is okay. However, if someone is looking for something different from you then this can cause tension and upset. Before you even think about meeting someone, make sure you discuss what your expectations are and ensure that everyone involved is on the same page.
Do Your Homework
Where possible you want to make sure you look into the person you’re planning to meet, to make sure they’re the person you think they are. It is worth asking them if they have any social media pages etc. that you can look at. This can be a tricky one, because it is also sensible to keep your data private until you meet someone, so just use caution. I have heard great things about the Match Me Happy service – free to join & helps keep you safe from scammers!
Meet Somewhere Safe
If you have done all of this and chatted for some time, it may be coming to the time you’re thinking about meeting someone. If you are going to do this make sure you tell someone you trust all of the details – where you’re meeting, who you’re meeting etc. Check in with them while you’re there too! Pick somewhere that you know and can leave/get home easily from if you wish!
Stay Within Your Boundaries
It can be tempted to get carried away and perhaps go somewhere else with someone or accompany them home. We would recommend making sure you save this for the 2nd date, just so you know the person a little better and can be a little safer.
Enjoy Online Dating
There are lots of free dating sites out there and from what I have heard they can be a really fun way to get out there and meet new people. Just make sure that you stay sensible and do what you can to stay safe. Remember that not everyone online will be who they say they are, so make sure you consider this whenever you’re talking to someone. Don’t give too much of your personal data away before you meet them! Make sure you know someone and are confident in who they are before you invite them to your home and certainly before you go somewhere unknown with them.
That said, they can be fun too so make sure you enjoy the experience and get the most out of it too!
